Go into the More Apps sub-menu and you will see a list of every single app installed on your system. This app can also set the volume for other apps that aren’t running. If you were to increase the system volume, the volume for the other apps will change accordingly. If, with the system volume set to 50%, you set the volume slider for an app to its highest point, it will still only output 50% volume. The volume level for an app is set relative to the current volume level for the OS.įor example, if your volume is currently set to 50%, the volumes you set for an app will always be equal to, or less than 50% of the volume. The app decides that all apps can play music, even if they can’t which is why each one that’s running will have a volume slider.īefore you can use Background Music to set different volume levels for apps, you need to understand how it works.
It runs entirely in the menu bar where, if you click the app’s icon, you can set individual volume levels for the apps that are currently running.

There is no shortage of apps that allow you to set app specific volume levels on macOS however there are free apps, and there are paid apps. Unfortunately, out of the box, macOS doesn’t let you set app specific volume levels. Apps like media players need to be able to play audio as a core function whereas messengers, or any other app that has audio you cannot turn off may need a mute button. Even better, Ear Trumpet lets you control both universal and desktop apps.Lots of apps can play sound and/or audio but that doesn’t necessarily make them all equal. Click the Ear Trumpet icon on the system tray and it will pop up individual volume sliders for all your running apps, making it one step easier than opening up the Volume Mixer. Ear Trumpet offers some other pretty cool features. It’s a small, open-source app available on GitHub that will retain app volume settings even after you restart your computer.

Get Better Control of App Volume in Windows 10 with Ear Trumpet These are fairly big limitations, so while Volume Mixer is nice for making temporary adjustments, it isn’t going to fix anything for you in the long run. They are labeled according to the page’s title. Web browsers that use a separate process for each tab, like Google Chrome, will have a separate volume control for each tab that plays sounds.You can’t adjust volume individually for universal apps. Only desktop apps will appear in the Volume Mixer.Since it’s always running, it will stay how you set it until you restart your computer, at which point it will match itself to 100% of the master volume.
The only exception to this is the System Sounds volume. Each time you launch an app, you’ll need to set its relative volume again. While setting individual app volumes can be really useful, there are a few limitations to keep in mind: The level you set for each app is relative to the master volume, so as you change the master volume, the volumes for each app also change. The Device slider controls the master volume.
